Jesus was led to a hill. He was made to carry his own cross. He was so tired and hungry and sad that he had trouble carrying it. Many people gathered to watch the spectacle. Some made fun of him, some wept, and some helped him, like Veronika.

The legend of Veronika is that the image of Jesus’ face remained on her veil when, breaking with tradition and safety, she ran to him, removed her veil, and wiped his face.

Simon helped him carry his cross. They nailed Jesus to a cross, and his life slipped slowly away from him. He wondered why this was happening to him, and where his God was now that he needed God more than ever. He became very thirsty, so some soldiers held up a vinegar-soaked sponge for him to suck on.
